Mikka Hoppinen put the Norwegians ahead from Marek Sapara's superb free-kick on 24 minutes, but Andriy Shevchenko headed the Blues level when Florent Malouda delivered a deep but inviting left-wing cross in the 53rd minute.
The Ukraine skipper outjumped Hoppinen and goalkeeper Hirschfeld - but the story of the game was Chelsea's inability to convert numerous chances. That was the theme taken up by manager Jose Mourinho immediately after the game.
Admitting he was frustrated by the result, Mourinho said he was disappointed because, "They were not a problem - we were the problem.
"I was a game we could win with five, six, seven....We had about 12 shots in the first half and we had better chances in the second, but only one goal.
"If we need 20 chances to score, we have a problem."
Mourinho congratulated Rosenborg, for their tactics, recalling that when he was manager of a small club he had to use whatever weapons he had, and said he would have done what the Norwegians did tonight.
But he repeated, "If we need 20 chances to score one goal, we have a big problem."
