Van Nistelrooy broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute as Real Madrid fought their way to a 2-0 home win, and the Dutchman was happy, as much with his own display as the team's.
"It was a hard match because Recreativo closed up in defence and didn't give us much space to work with," he said.
"We had several chances and were finally able to score and win. It was tough.
"We did what we had to to win this match. When we touch slowly, other teams take advantage to steal the ball and try to score.
"We did well, but I think we were a little unlucky having missed so many easy goals."
Asked about the style of football, he quipped: "All that matters is that we took the three points and we're still leaders. We have two weeks off in the League and it was great for us to finish like this. We'll see what happens after.
"We're playing well and winning matches, and that's what counts. We've played nine games, with seven victories and two draws. We're in great form right now."
On his own personal performance, he opined: "After this match I realised I am playing at a good pace. I feel very good. I have played in a lot of matches this season and I am happy that I feel fit.
"Scoring is part of my job, but today it was difficult because they closed up in defence and were very aggressive. We were unlucky not to score in the first half.
"Regarding the rotations, my head says that they are good because we need to rest. I myself feel a lot better thanks to that, though my heart tells me that I always want to play.
"The League is very long and we all have to stop at some point."
