The German champions met their Italian counterparts in the Beckenbauer trophy but it was the Serie A team who triumphed thanks to an Amantino Mancini strike in the second half.
Klinsmann, who played for Inter between 1989 and 1992, was pleased despite the defeat.
“One always wants to win against a prestigious team such as Inter,” said Klinsmann after the game.
“I think we played well despite the result and we did try to create openings and take our chances but the Nerazzurri sat-back and defended well and it became hard for us.
“Besides, we are not yet ready physically to be able to pressurise them and press the game.
“The performance was good but the result was definitely not.”
It’s back to the drawing board for Die Bayern and Kilnsmann as he prepares his side for the new Bundesliga season.
