David Villa Has Refused

Spanish sports daily Marca reported that the Real Madrid hierarchy has sounded out the prospect of signing Valencia's David Villa in next summer's transfer window.

According to the controversial newspaper, Madrid president Ramon Calderon is eager to give the side a more Spanish flavour, with Spain's star forward top on his list.

Villa himself, however, refused to remark on the issue.

"You already know that I can't talk about that," he told the media.

The former Real Zaragoza man is subject to a 150 million euro minimum release clause to extricate him from his contract at the Mestalla.

Even big-spending Madrid may baulk at such a figure. For now, though, it's too early to tell.

Marca, indeed, speculates that there could be little chance of Valencia accepting a reduced figure, the two clubs allegedly still at loggerheads over Pedja Mijatovic's acrimonious move from the Mestalla to the Bernabeu in 1996.
